What is Spidercam?

The Spidercam is a system which enables film and television cameras to move both vertically and horizontally over a predetermined area, typically the playing field of a sporting event such as a cricket pitch, football field or a tennis court. The name “Spidercam” is a trademark.

If you are one of those who has been intirigued by the usage of spidercam in cricket events now-a-days, then here is your answer.

However one thing that you must be clear about is that, spidercams have been in use in other sports as well, notebaly, football and tennis.

WHAT IS A SPIDERCAM?

It is a system using which film and television camera can cover filming by moving in both horizontly and vertically.

This movement typicaly takes place in a predetermined area, known as “FLYING AREA”.

TECHNICAL ASPECTS

1.Flying area

  • The Flying Area is the entire Area that can be reached by the dolly or the lifting cables during operation.

2.Winches

  • The electric winches are installed in a self-supporting Aluminum Frame with clear screens.

  • Thanks to the four wheels the Winches can be easily moved and setup.

  • Due to their weight the Winches they don’t need to be weighed down any further, although they have to be secured against unintentional moving or slipping.

3.Pulleys

  • The Pulleys deflect the lifting cable from the Winch to the Dolly.

  • Their positions define the Flying Area and Maximum Height.

4.Control Station

  • The Control Station houses the entire Control Software, and acts as the Working Place for the Pilot and Camera Operator.

5.Camera

  • The spidercam is not restricted to a single camera type, but can be equipped with various cameras.

6.Lens

Not only the camera choie is flexible, you can also euip different lenses on the spidercam.

WORKING PROCESS:

  1. The Spidercam operates with four motorized winches (refer the above figure)positioned at each corner at the base of the covered area, each of which controls a Kevlar cable connected to a gyro-stabilized camera-carrier, or dolly.

  2. By controlling the winding and unwinding of the cables, the system allows the dolly to reach any position in the three-dimensional space.

  3. The inputs of the Spidercam “pilot” are processed by software which forwards the commands to the winches via fiber optic cables.

  4. Two of the Kevlar cables also have fiber optic cables woven into them to carry commands to the camera and the remote head, and bring the camera’s high definition signal back to the control station.

  5. The remote head, which houses the camera, provides pan and tilt movement and includes the lens remote which controls focus, zoom and irising.

  6. A gyro sensor in the dolly stabilises the horizon.

  7. A specially trained Spidercam camera operator controls the camera.
